Welcome to my new website and blog. As this represents the official launch of my wedding photography business in Berlin I thought I would say a few words of introduction.
I moved to Berlin in May 2011 after working as a wedding photographer in Australia for almost seven years. I spent the first seven months here working on my visual arts practice (my other job) thanks to a grant from the Australian Arts Council. Those months were an interesting time for me. I grew a lot. It was a great time to experiment with how I do things, learn what I really like and what is important to me – some experiments worked out to great success, some turned out to be complete failures that I think I’ll just sweep under the rug and pretend didn’t happen. In the end what I learned was so very simple:
Do what you love – you’ll always excel at what you’re passionate about. This is an obvious one. You may have to poke around at a few different angles until you get a good fit for what works for both you and the rest of the world.
Enjoy life – everything is a learning experience so just relax, don’t take things too seriously.
Give to others – always ask: what can you contribute?
Love, compassion and gratitude are at the core of a happy life and they are all free and readily available.
For me, photographing weddings covers all of those. I love creating beautiful things and I love observing and getting to know people. It’s one of the happiest days in a couples’ life and as a photographer you’re privileged to share in that joy. I enjoy learning and a wedding is always a challenge when you are pushing yourself to get the most out of every situation, to make every shoot better than the last. Weddings are a microcosm of our human condition and culture, it’s a thrill for me to observe and photograph so many elements of life all in one day. My photography is what I give to my clients through providing beautiful memories and artful photography. In the larger scheme of things I aim to contribute to culture through all that I do professionally as both an artist and a photographer. Lastly, a wedding is a celebration of love. What more could I ask for?
This year I have big plans. I intend to develop my craft even further, really digging deep, to get the most out of a shoot to create images more wonderful than before. I love photographs that are imbued with emotion, memory and beauty and I really want to intensify that.
I aim to book as many weddings as I can, shoot personal work as often as I can and generally just live the creative life that this city really draws out of its inhabitants. I’m hoping to book more international weddings and with flights across Europe and the UK so cheap at the moment it makes it feasable for wedding couples to book a photographer based on their style, skill and personality, not just their location. I already have one wedding booked in Bordeaux France which I’m really excited about and am looking to do more.
As a visual artist I have a passion for helping others in the creative industries. I hope to connect with more creatives this year and use my photography skills to help them with their own ambitions.
This blog is the place where I will share my journey. I intend for it to be a creative visual journal. I’ll be sharing new work, wedding & portrait shoots, older personal work and quite likely photography and cinematography that has inspired me over the years. I’d be delighted for you to join me on this journey.
